Hits and misses: Bambi for Free People

There are denim flares of caricatural width that edge on unwearable. There are also some, I might venture to say, less-than-flattering layers that a slight Bambi Northwood Blyth seems to get a little lost in. For those reasons I wouldn't count this as one of Free People's best look books, but then with the occurrence that they release them it won't be long before it's superseded by, perhaps, something with more winning looks.

Where this one does succeed the most it's in an earthy covered look kept tidy with a cinched in corset belt; a slouchy off-shoulder knit that's effortless simplicity; and this shimmering metallic mini that's up a nick from the casual nature of the rest of it.

Latest Chanel bag: Boy Chanel

Its name might straight away betray its masculine qualities, but if ever there was a time that was ripe for the launch of a women's bag with a mannish lean, Chanel did well to pick this one. After all, this is a period in which a masculine undertone permeates through much of women's fashion; an suggestion that we only expect to strengthen as 2012 approaches, bringing with it an expected 1930s revival. There's another fact exposed: this masculine undertone is not modern or futuristic, nor based on an experimentation with androgyny. Instead, it's a masculine undertone that carries with it inheritance appeal. And few style houses do heritage as well as Chanel.

So it is that masculine character merge with heritage appeal to shape one of Chanel's autumn / fall 2011 offerings: the Boy bag.

Melbourne's Mission 65 time event

Traveling up a short flight of stairs from Melbourne's Chapel Street was akin to stepping back in time. For the stairs gave way to a floor space on which people decorated out in vintage fashions, some not too dissimilar from those we're expectant to make a comeback in the new year, did more than mill and swill, they cavorted, swanned and jitterbugged.

All this post-war glamour, wide-ranging of several ladies who could have told you much about the period having been amongst Christian Dior's original models, was in the name of fundraising. Designed to benefit the Prahran Mission, a charity that assists people living with mental illness and those living with financial hardships, the evening took in everything from a fashion procession to a silent auction. And it did it all with more than a hint of motivation derived from Dior's fashion house and the 'New Look' he gave to the world. After all, it was in the shadow of the Second World War that Dior took centre stage in the fashion industry, and it was the very same year that the Prahran Mission began to help those in need.
